Health Unit Partners with Fleming College to Increase Access to Food Handler Training

Collaboration with community partners grows to ensure convenient and accessible training.

PORT HOPE (April 24, 2024) – In response to evolving educational needs and the demand for convenient access, the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit (HKPR District Health Unit) will now offer the Ministry of Health’s Food Handler Training Certification exclusively online. In-class instruction will be led through Fleming College who will expanding accessibility to essential food safety education across the district area.

Under provincial regulations, all food premises, including special event vendors, are mandated to have at least one certified food handler present during every hour of operation. Acknowledging the critical role of food safety in public health, the HKPR District Health Unit emphasizes the importance of attaining Food Handler Certification for those working in the food industry.

"We are committed to empowering individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to ensure food safety in our communities," stated Richard Ovcharovich, Manager, Environmental Health, with the HKPR District Health Unit. "Online training reflects our dedication to providing accessible, high-quality education while meeting the diverse needs of learners."

Participants in the Food Handler Certification course will receive comprehensive instruction on essential topics, including:

  • The role of Public Health Inspectors and relevant legislation.
  • Microbiological contamination and prevention of foodborne illnesses.
  • Personal hygiene, premises sanitation, and pest control practices.
  • Management of food allergens and recalls.

To complement online offerings, Fleming College will administer in-class instruction, catering to individuals preferring traditional classroom settings. The partnership with Fleming College underscores a commitment to expanding educational opportunities and fostering collaboration within the community.

The cost of the Food Handler Training Program, facilitated by Fleming College and HKPR District Health Unit, is designed to be accessible to all community members. Various training options are available, including in-person instruction, home study, and challenge exams, ensuring flexibility and affordability for participants.
